WAM vs GPA: What's the Difference at Australian Universities?

WAM (Weighted Average Mark) and GPA (Grade Point Average) both measure academic performance but use different inputs. WAM averages your raw percentage marks (e.g. 78%) weighted by credit points. GPA converts those marks into grade bands (HD=7, D=6, CR=5, P=4, F=0) before averaging. Two students scoring 75% and 84% have identical GPAs (both Distinction) but meaningfully different WAMs.¹

How GPA is calculated

This is why WAM is preferred for ranking students for honours and scholarships: it captures differences within grade bands that GPA cannot.

Which Australian universities use WAM vs GPA?

Some universities publish both metrics. Always verify on your official transcript.

Can you convert WAM to GPA?

There is no single official WAM to GPA conversion formula. The two metrics use different inputs and cannot be precisely converted.

This table maps WAM ranges to the grade band that contains them, then to the GPA points for that band. A WAM of 76 and a WAM of 83 both map to GPA 6.0 (Distinction) even though they are meaningfully different WAMs.

If you need to provide a GPA to an overseas institution and your university only issues WAM, contact the requesting institution for their preferred conversion method. USyd and UNSW explicitly advise this on their student pages.¹²

Why WAM matters more than GPA for Australian students

Honours eligibility is the main reason. Most Go8 faculties set honours thresholds in WAM (e.g. 80 or above for H1 First Class), not in GPA bands. A student with a GPA of 6.0 could have a WAM anywhere from 75 to 84. Only WAM determines which side of the threshold they fall on.

Scholarships are ranked by WAM. Two students with the same GPA of 6.0 but WAMs of 76 and 83 are ordered differently on a merit list. Granting a scholarship based on GPA alone would miss this distinction entirely.

Postgraduate entry requirements at Go8 universities are stated as minimum WAM values (typically 65 to 75), not GPA thresholds. Always check the specific program page for the exact requirement.
