Monash University
Monash WAM Calculator
Monash calculates WAM using year-level weighting: first-year units count at half the weight of later units.¹
Formula
Standard WAM (other universities)
WAM = Σ(mark × CP) ÷ Σ(CP)
Monash WAM (year-weighted)
WAM = Σ(mark × CP × year weight) ÷ Σ(CP × year weight)
Where: 1st year weight = 0.5, all other years = 1.0
Worked example
| Unit | Mark | CP | Year weight | Mark × CP × W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MGMT1000 | 72 | 6 | 0.5 | 216 |
| MGMT2010 | 81 | 6 | 1.0 | 486 |
| MGMT3050 | 74 | 6 | 1.0 | 444 |
| Total | 15 | 1146 | ||
Monash WAM = 1146 ÷ 15 = 76.40
Without year weighting: (72 + 81 + 74) ÷ 3 = 75.67
Year-level weighting rewards improvement: strong later-year results count more than a weak first year.

FAQ
Common questions
Does Monash use year-level weighting for WAM?
Yes. Monash applies year-level weighting when calculating WAM. First-year units are weighted at 0.5, while second, third, and fourth-year units are weighted at 1.0. This means your later-year results have a greater impact on your final WAM than first-year results.
Do failed units count towards Monash WAM?
Yes. At Monash, all units with a numeric mark (including failed units) are included in your WAM calculation. Grades of SFR (Supplementary Final Result), NE, NAS, WI, and units graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis only are excluded.
What WAM do I need for Monash Honours?
For Monash Honours, a WAM of 70 or above is typically required. A WAM of 80 or above qualifies for H1 (First Class Honours), 70-79 for H2A (Second Class Division A), and 60-69 for H2B (Second Class Division B). Minimum requirements can vary by faculty.
